Erbil Citadel
Address:
Erbil - Iraq and Pilsen, Litomysl - Czech Republic

Citadel in Erbil, also called Qala Erbil, is located in the historical center of the city of Erbil, the capital of Kurdistan Region of Iraq. It is considered to be one of the oldest continuously inhabited cultural settlements in the world. The real age and the origin of the Citadel could be discovered based on the archaeological research, which has not been carried out yet. The Citadel was originally divided into three equally large self-governing parts based mostly on the social status of family. From the 1970s 90% of the population of Citadel was replaced with rural mountain families. This strategy led to the devastation of historical buildings of Citadel. At recent time the Citadel is uninhabited and rehabilitation project of Citadel is planned. In GEMA ART GROUP provided the Study of Preservation and Rehabilitation of the Citadel in Erbil. The scientific, historical, archaeological and restoration research was funded by the aid of the Government of the Czech Republic. The project results were presented at the UNESCO conference. The 3D Model and Database of the Erbil citadel software was developed by GEMA ART GROUP experts and presented in the XXI. International CIPA symposium in Athens in 2007.
