Study Tour to Syria

The project of the study tour offered to the members of the High Commission of the Erbil Citadel Revitalization from the Kurdistan Region of Iraq a practical view of the necessary aspects of the heritage conservation management in Syria that are related to the management of the Citadel in Erbil and that should help to streamline the management system of the HCECR, including its management structure and roles.

The study tour training program was focused on the daily work with the participants to improve management and conservation of the heritage site for which they are responsible. The key persons from the Syrian side were appointed for their high expertise and distinguished work in the field of heritage management and restoration. They shared their experience with the members of the HCECR in form of lectures which help them to enhance their capacities in questions of management, conservation and development.

The study tour was prepared by the experts of GEMA ART GROUP, Mr. Petr Justa, Conservation Engineer, and Mr. Miroslav Houska, Orientalist and Arabist, Heritage Management, who both participated in the Erbil Citadel projects during the last years. The Syrian partner, the Directorate General of Antiquities and Museums, was represented by highly specialized Syrian experts, Mr. Omer Ibrahim, Cultural Heritage Senior Manager of the DGAM, the Vice Director of the Damascus region Department and the head of the Historical Building Section, and Mrs. Lina Kutiefan, Manager of Cultural Heritage Management Department of the DGAM.
