Karlštejn Castle was founded in 1348 by the Charles IV, King of Bohemia and Holy Roman Emperor as his private residence and a place of the royal treasure’s safekeeping, especially his collections of holy relics and the Imperial Crown Jewels. The construction was completed in 1365 when the Chapel of the Holy Cross in the Great Tower was consecrated.

The current ongoing works at the Castle are part of the Integrated Regional Operative Program (IROP): “Karlštejn Castle – Jewel of Bohemia” and their aim is to create a new exhibition in this monument. The work is being carried out in the Castle Burgraviate, in the Imperial Palace basement, in arcades, an old stable and in the rock cellar. The ongoing work respects the principles of historical elements protection in order to avoid damaging the listed parts of the castle.
